fishing
Phuket offers world-class game fishing and angling. Despite quite a lot of commercial trawling, Phuket is surrounded by a sea rich in fish. It provides perfect conditions for many of the best gamefish in the world. However, Phuket has not yet come into the international spotlight as a game fishing venue, and there are relatively few operators and serious game fishermen out there in Phuket waters. Nonetheless it is fast gaining a reputation as the sailfish capital of S.E. Asia. The fishing community have a catch-and-release policy.
Sailfish are present in incredible numbers. Pacific Sailfish are present during the whole year with a peak from May to August, during most of the southwest monsoon season.

In contrast Black Marlin have a good run from October to March. They are usually juveniles (upto 450 lbs) and the best areas are the Similan islands, and the "drop-off" west of Phuket.

There are several varieties of Tuna which are plentiful throughout the year in the waters surrounding Phuket. These include Mackerel Tuna, LongfinTuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Skipjack Tuna and Dogtooth Tuna.

Large Giant Trevally are plentiful.

Other inshore species include a variety of bottom fish, Cobia, Dolphin fish (Dorado), Golden Trevally, Blue Finned Trevally, Mangrove Jacks, Coral Trout, Queenfish, and Rainbow Runners.

Wahoo are plentiful during the southwest monsoon.

Barracuda, King Mackerel and Narrow Barred Mackerel can always be found during the whole year.

For local single day trips, the map below gives an indication of the best locations and times of the year for several species.
Many of the single day charter trips on professional boats often focus on the Racha islands and also the drop-off point (25 nm west of Phuket).

The star of the show at the Racha islands is most definitely the Sailfish - especially off the east side of both Racha Yai and Racha Noi. Wahoo, Dorado and King Mackerel also feature in the area.

The drop-off is the best place to get a Black Marlin. Although this point is only 200m deep, there is a chance to target Dorado, Wahoo and several Tuna.

Local trips also cater for relatively novice anglers and lady anglers.

Multi-day live-on-board game fishing safaris head towards the Similan islands, and offer discerning anglers a great opportunity to experience fishing at its very best. The Similans provide excellent opportunities for marlin, wahoo and yellowfin tuna. There is good botom fishing and wahoo popper fishing. The islands are a National Marine Park and fishing is actually banned within 3000 meters of the shore, in order to provide a safe area for fry and juveniles.

The nearby Don Mai Seamount (20 miles west of the Similans) is good for Black Marlin and also offers oustanding action with Wahoo and Yellowfin Tuna.
