Phuket city is in some ways less geared up for the tourist than some of the beach resorts, and is essentially a truly thriving Thai town. Accomodation is very well priced, even though slightly limited. But is has many attractions including the old town.
Shopping and dining are very good here. It is still often referred to as Phuket town, even though it recently acquired official city status. If you can tear yourself away from the beach, Phuket city is certainly worth a visit.
It also provides a good vantage point for east coast boat departures.
